Mary Esther Wells
(May 13, 1943 – July 26, 1992) was an American singer who defined the early sound of Motown Records in the early sixties. In 1990, Wells recorded an album for Ian Levine's Motorcity Records, Wells' voice began to cut off, causing the singer to visit a local hospital. Doctors diagnosed Wells with laryngeal cancer. Treatments for the disease ravaged her voice, forcing her to quit her music career. In the summer of 1992, Wells' cancer returned and she was rushed to the Kenneth Norris Jr. Cancer Hospital in Los Angeles with pneumonia. With the effects of her unsuccessful treatments and a weakened immune system, Wells died on July 26, 1992 at the age of forty-nine.

Elvis Presley
His talent, good looks, sensuality, charisma, and good humor endeared him to millions, as did the humility and human kindness he demonstrated throughout his life. Known the world over by his first name, he is regarded as one of the most important figures of twentieth century popular culture.
August 16, 1977 Shortly after midnight Elvis returns to Graceland from a late-night visit to the dentist. Through the early morning of the 16th he takes care of last minute tour details and relaxes with family and staff. He is to fly to Portland, Maine that night and do a show there on the 17th, then continue the scheduled tour. He retires to his master suite at Graceland around 7:00 AM to rest for his evening flight. By late morning, Elvis Presley is dead of heart failure. It is announced by mid-afternoon. In a matter of hours the shock registers around the world.

Marty Robbins
Born Martin David Robinson on September 26, 1925, near Glendale, Arizona, He was an American Country & Western Hall of Fame musician and one of the most popular and successful country singers of his era. Several of his songs became pop hits as well. Marty Robbins died on December 8, 1982 at the age of 57, due to surgical complications.

James Travis Reeves
(August 20, 1923–July 31, 1964) was an American country and pop music singer-songwriter popular in the 1950s and 1960s who also gained a wide international following for his pioneering smooth Nashville sound. Known as Gentleman Jim, his songs continued to chart for years following his death at age 40 in a private airplane crash.

(Virginia Patterson Hensley), was born in the Shenandoah Valley in Winchester, Virginia, on September 8, 1932. Country music lost a magical entertainer when her career was ended in an airplane crash in Tennessee, in 1963.

John Denver
was born Henry John Deutschendorf, Jr. (December 31, 1943 – October 12, 1997) was an American country music/folk singer-songwriter and folk rock musician. He was one of the most popular acoustic artists of the 1970s in terms of record sales, On October 12, 1997, Denver was killed when the Long-EZ aircraft he was piloting crashed just off the coast of California at Pacific Grove, shortly after taking off from the Monterey Peninsula Airport.

Jackie Keith Whitley
was an American country music singer. Whitley's brief career in mainstream country music lasted from 1984 till his death in 1989, but he continues to influence an entire generation of singers and songwriters. He charted nineteen singles on the Billboard country charts, including five consecutive Number Ones: "Don't Close Your Eyes", "When You Say Nothing at All", "I'm No Stranger to the Rain", "I Wonder Do You Think of Me" and "It Ain't Nothin' he cause of death was acute ethanolism (alcohol poisoning),[4] and Davidson County medical examiner Charles Harlan stated that his blood alcohol level was .477. Whitley was 34 years old.

Charles Hardin Holley – Buddy Holly
Although his success lasted only a year and a half before his death in an airplane crash, Holly is described by critic Bruce Eder as "the single most influential creative force in early rock and roll."[1] His works and innovations inspired and influenced both his contemporaries and later musicians, notably The Beatles, The Beach Boys, The Rolling Stones, and Bob Dylan, and exerted a profound influence on popular music.[2] Buddy was offered the Winter Dance Party by the GAC agency, a three-week tour across the Midwest opening on January 23, 1959, with other notable performers such as Dion and the Belmonts, Ritchie Valens, and J. P. "The Big Bopper" Richardson. Holly, Valens, Richardson, and the pilot were killed en route to Moorhead, MN, when their small plane crashed soon after taking off from Clear Lake, Iowa on February 3, 1959.

Conway Twitty
was born Harold Jenkins on September 1, 1933 in Friars Point, Mississippi. Conway Twitty became ill while performing in Branson, Missouri, and was in pain while he was on the tour bus. He died in Springfield, Missouri, at Cox South Hospital from an abdominal aortic aneurysm. The cause of death was a ruptured blood vessel in his stomach, hospital officials said. Mr. Twitty collapsed Friday night on his tour bus after a performance in nearby Branson, Mo.

James Joseph "Jim" Croce
January 10, 1943 – September 20, 1973. Croce, 30, and Muehleisen, 24, died in a small commercial plane crash on September 20, 1973, shortly before his ABC single, "I Got a Name" was to be released. Croce had just completed a concert in Natchitoches, Louisiana, and was flying to Sherman, Texas. The pilot and all passengers (Croce; Muehleisen; Croce's booking agent Kenneth D. Cortose; George Stevens, the comic who was the show's warm-up act; and Dennis Rast, another passenger) were killed instantly at 10:45 PM EDT on September 20, 1973, less than an hour after the end of the concert. Upon takeoff, the Beechcraft E18 plane did not gain enough altitude to clear a pecan tree at the end of the runway, which investigators said was the only tree for hundreds of yards. The official report from the NTSB[6] hints that the charter pilot, Robert Newton Elliott, who had severe coronary artery disease and had run a portion of the three miles to the airport from a motel, may have suffered a heart attack. A later investigation placed sole blame for the accident on pilot error.
Stevie Ray Vaughan
October 3, 1954 – August 27, 1990 was an American guitarist, singer and songwriter. For travel to the next venue, the tour manager reserved four helicopters to circumvent congested highway traffic. In very dense fog, the helicopters, not certified for flight under instrument flight rules (IFR) lifted off at 12:40 A.M. Just past the lift-off zone was a 300-foot hill. Vaughan's helicopter pilot was unfamiliar with the area, and did not climb to sufficient altitude immediately after take-off. Vaughan's helicopter crashed into the hill.
Ernest Dale Tubb
(February 9, 1914–September 6, 1984), nicknamed the Texas Troubadour, was an American singer and songwriter and one of the pioneers of country music. His biggest career hit song, "Walking the Floor Over You" (1941), marked the rise of the honky tonk style of music. His singing voice remained intact until late in life, when he fell ill with emphysema. He died of the illness in 1984 at Baptist Hospital in Nashville, Tennessee. He is buried in Nashville's Hermitage Memorial Gardens.

Valerie June Carter Cash
(June 23, 1929 – May 15, 2003)[1] was a singer, songwriter, actress, comedienne and author who was a member of the Carter Family and the second wife of singer Johnny Cash. She played the guitar, banjo, harmonica, and autoharp; and acted in several films and television shows. June Carter Cash died in Nashville, Tennessee, on May 15, 2003 of complications following heart valve replacement surgery, surrounded by her family, and her husband of 35 years, Johnny Cash.

Johnny Cash
(February 26, 1932–September 12, 2003), born J. R. Cash, was an American singer-songwriter and one of the most influential musicians of the 20th century.[2] Primarily a country music artist, his songs and sound spanned many other genres including rockabilly androck and roll (especially early in his career), as well as blues, folk and gospel. n 1997, Cash was diagnosed with the neurodegenerative disease Shy-Drager syndrome. The diagnosis was later altered to autonomic neuropathy associated with diabetes. This illness forced Cash to curtail his touring. He was hospitalized in 1998 with severe pneumonia, which damaged his lungs. Cash died less than four months after his wife June Carter Cash, on September 12, 2003, while hospitalized at Baptist Hospital in Nashville.

Joe Strummer
(21 August 1952 – 22 December 2002), John Graham Mellor better known by his stage name Joe Strummer, was the co-founder, lyricist,rhythm guitarist and lead singer of the English punk rock band The Clash. Strummer died suddenly on 22 December 2002 in his home at Broomfield in Somerset, the victim of an undiagnosed congenital heart defect.
Edward Thomas "Eddie" Rabbitt
(November 27, 1941 – May 7, 1998) was an American country music singer-songwriter who enjoyed much pop success at the height of his career in the 1970s and 80s with 20 #1 country hits including "Drivin' My Life Away" and "I Love a Rainy Night," On May 7, 1998 in Nashville, Tennessee, Eddie Rabbitt died from lung cancer at the age of 56. He had struggled with the disease since being diagnosed in March 1997, and had undergone radiation treatment, as well as surgery to remove an infected part of his lung.

Hiram King "Hank" Williams
(September 17, 1923 – January 1, 1953) was an American singer and songwriter and musician who has become an icon of country music and one of the most influential songwriters of the 20th century. A leading pioneer of the honky tonk style, he had numerous hit records, and his charismatic performances and succinct compositions increased his fame. On January 1, 1953, Williams was due to play in Canton, Ohio, but he was unable to fly due to weather problems. He hired a chauffeur and, before leaving the old Andrew Johnson Hotel in Knoxville, Tennessee, injected himself with vitamin B12 and morphine. He then left in a Cadillac, though contrary to popular belief, he did not have a bottle of whiskey with him. The only items found in the back seat of his car were a few cans of beer and the hand-written lyrics to an unrecorded song.
When the 17-year-old chauffeur, Charles Carr pulled over at an all-night service station in Oak Hill, West Virginia, he discovered that Williams was unresponsive and becoming rigid.[8] Upon closer examination, it was discovered that Hank Williams was dead. He was 29. The official cause of death was heart failure, but there’s still some mystery about the circumstances.

Richard Edward Arnold
(May 15, 1918 – May 8, 2008), known professionally as Eddy Arnold, was an American country music singer who performed for six decades. He created the Nashville sound in the late 1950s, and had 147 songs on the Billboard Magazine music charts, second only to George Jones. Though Jones had more individual hits, one authoritative study ranks Arnold as the all-time leader for hits and their time on the charts. Arnold sold more than 85 million records from 1943 to his death in 2008. Eddy Arnold died of natural causes at 5:00am on May 8, 2008 in a nursing home in Nashville, a week before his 90th birthday. His wife of 66 years, Sally Gayhart Arnold, had preceded him in death by just two months. They were survived by two children, two grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.

Jerry Reed Hubbard
(March 20, 1937 – September 1, 2008), known professionally as Jerry Reed, was an American country music singer,country guitarist, session musician, songwriter, and actor who appeared in over a dozen films. Reed died in Nashville, Tennessee, on September 1, 2008, of complications from emphysema.

Faron Young
(February 25, 1932 – December 10, 1996) was an American country music singer and songwriter from the early 1950s into the mid-1980s and one of its most colorful stars. Though young country acts like BR5-49 were putting his music before new audiences in the mid-1990s, Young apparently felt the industry had turned its back on him.[5] That, and despondency over his deteriorating health, were cited as possible reasons why Young shot himself with a revolver on December 9, 1996. He died in Nashville the following day and was cremated.

Patrick Wayne Swayze
August 18, 1952 – September 14, 2009)[1] was an American actor, dancer and singer-songwriter. Swayze was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in early 2008. He continued acting until 2009, when he became too ill to do so. Later the same year he died from the disease
Michael Joseph Jackson
(August 29, 1958 – June 25, 2009), known as the "King of Pop", was an African American musician and one of the most commercially successful and influential entertainers of all time. His unique contributions to music and dance, along with a highly publicized personal life, made him a prominent figure in popular culture for over four decades. On January 27, 1984, Michael and other members of the Jacksons filmed a Pepsi Cola commercial, overseen by executive Philip Dusenberry,] at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles. In front of a full house of fans during a simulated concert, pyrotechnics accidentally set Jackson's hair on fire. He suffered second-degree burns to his scalp. Jackson underwent treatment to hide the scars on his scalp, and he also had his third rhinoplasty shortly thereafter.Jackson never recovered from this injury. Pepsi settled out of court, and Jackson donated his $1.5 million settlement to the Brotman Medical Center in Culver City, California, which now has a "Michael Jackson Burn Center" in honor of his donation. On June 25, 2009, Jackson collapsed at his rented mansion at 100 North Carolwood Drive in the Holmby Hills district of Los Angeles. Attempts at resuscitating him by his personal physician were unsuccessful. Los Angeles Fire Department paramedics received a 911 call at 12:22 p.m. (PDT), arriving three minutes later at Jackson's location. He was reportedly not breathing and CPR was performed. Resuscitation efforts continued en route to the Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center, and for an hour after arriving there at 1:13 p.m. (20:13 UTC).[153] He was pronounced dead at 2:26 p.m. local time (21:26 UTC). On August 24, multiple news outlets quoted anonymous sources as stating that the Los Angeles coroner had decided to treat Jackson's death as a homicide; this was later confirmed by the coroner on August 28.[164][165] At the time of death, Jackson had been administered propofol, lorazepam and midazolam. Law enforcement officials are currently conducting a manslaughter investigation of his personal physician, Conrad Murray.

Virginia Wynette Pugh
known professionally as Tammy Wynette (May 5, 1942 – April 6, 1998), was an American country music singer-songwriter and one of country music's best-known artists and biggest-selling female vocalists. After years of medical problems, numerous hospitalizations, approximately twenty-six major surgeries and an addiction to large doses of pain medication, Tammy Wynette died, in her sleep, on April 6, 1998 of a blood clot in her lung. She was 55. Despite her persistent illnesses, she continued to perform until shortly before her death and had other performances scheduled.

Roy Kelton Orbison
(April 23, 1936 – December 6, 1988) was an American singer-songwriter and musician, well known for his distinctive, powerful voice, complex compositions, and dark emotional ballads. Roy was nearly blind and used thick corrective lenses from an early age. After having dinner at his mother's home in Tennessee, Orbison died of a massive heart attack.[78] He was 52 years old.

Roy Claxton Acuff
(September 15, 1903 – November 23, 1992) was an American country music singer, fiddler, and promoter. In the 1980s, after the death of his wife, Mildred, Acuff moved into a house on the Opryland grounds, and continued performing. In 1991, he was given a lifetime achievement award by theJohn F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. He died in Nashville on November 23, 1992 of heart failure.

Waylon Arnold Jennings
(June 15, 1937 – February 13, 2002) was an American country music singer and musician. A self-taught guitar player, he rose to prominence as a bass player for Buddy Holly following the break-up of The Crickets. He escaped death in the February 3, 1959 plane crash that took the lives of Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and J. P. "The Big Bopper" Richardson when he gave up his seat to the latter. His later life was plagued with health problems including a heart attack and diabetes brought on by a voracious appetite that developed after he beat his cocaine habit. Despite these problems, Jennings remained free from cocaine and continued recording and touring throughout the 1980s and 1990s, and into the new millennium. Jennings performed his final concert in late fall of 2001. Jennings suffered from worsening diabetes that had ended all but abbreviated touring. On December 19, 2001, his left foot was amputated in a Phoenix, Arizona hospital due to infection arising from his diabetes. Then, on February 13, 2002, Jennings died in his sleep of diabetic complications in Chandler, Arizona.

Buck Owens
(August 12, 1929–March 25, 2006), born as Alvis Edgar Owens, Jr. , was an American singer and guitarist who had 21 number one hits on the Billboard country music charts with his band, the Buckaroos. He had successfully recovered from oral cancer in the early 1990s, but had additional health problems near the end of the 1990s and the beginning of the 21st century, including pneumonia and a minor stroke suffered in 2004. These health problems had forced him to curtail his regular weekly performances with the Buckaroos at his Crystal Palace. Buck Owens died in his sleep of an apparent heart attack on March 25, 2006, only hours after performing at his Crystal Palace restaurant, club and museum in Bakersfield.

Vern Gosdin
(August 5, 1934 – April 28, 2009) was an American country music singer. Gosdin, who suffered a stroke at the start of April 2009, died peacefully in his sleep at a Nashville hospital the evening of April 28, 2009 at the age of 74.

John Gale Horton
(April 30, 1925 – November 5, 1960), he had several major crossover hits, most notably in 1959 with "The Battle of New Orleans" which won the 1960 Grammy Award for Best Country & Western Recording. The song won the Grammy Hall of Fame Award and in 2001 was named number 333 of the Songs of the Century. On November 5, 1960, Horton was killed in a head-on collision with a drunk driver on Highway 79 at Milano, Texas while returning home from a performance at the Skyline Club in Austin.

John Winston Ono Lennon
(9 October 1940 – 8 December 1980) was an English rock musician, singer-songwriter, author, and peace activist who gained worldwide fame as one of the founding members of The Beatles. On the night of 8 December 1980, at around 10:50 pm, Mark David Chapman shot Lennon in the back four times in the entrance of the Dakota apartment building. Earlier that evening, Lennon had autographed a copy of Double Fantasy for Chapman[207] who had been stalking Lennon since October. Lennon was taken to the emergency room of nearby Roosevelt Hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival at 11:07 pm
Dean Martin
(June 7, 1917 – December 25, 1995) was an American singer, film actor and comedian. He was one of the best known musical artists of the 1950s and 1960s. Martin's hit singles included "Memories Are Made of This", "That's Amore", "Everybody Loves Somebody", "Mambo Italiano", "Sway", "Volare" and "Ain't That A Kick In The Head?". n September 1993, Martin was diagnosed with lung cancer. He had been told he needed surgery on his kidneys and liver to prolong his life, but he refused. Martin died of acute respiratory failure at his home on Christmas morning 1995, at the age of 78.

Francis Albert "Frank" Sinatra
(December 12, 1915 – May 14, 1998) was an American singer and actor. After suffering another heart attack,[54] Frank Sinatra died at 10:50 pm on May 14, 1998 at the Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, with his wife Barbara by his side.[54] He was 82 years old.

Ray Charles Robinson
(September 23, 1930 – June 10, 2004), known by his stage name Ray Charles, was an American musician. Charles started to lose his sight at the age of five. He went completely blind by the age of seven.[8] Charles never knew exactly why he lost his sight[1]. Though there are sources that suggest his blindness was due to glaucoma, most sources suggest that Ray began to lose his sight from an infection caused by soapy water to his eyes which was left untreated. He died on June 10, 2004 at 11:35 a.m. of liver cancer at his home in Beverly Hills, California, surrounded by family and friends.

William Orville "Lefty" Frizzell
(March 31, 1928 – July 19, 1975) was an American country music singer and songwriter of the 1950s, and a leading exponent of honky tonk music. In 1972, Frizzell was inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame, and his song "If You've Got the Money, I've Got the Time" earned him a Grammy Hall of Fame Award. Success and money only added to Frizzell's alcohol addiction, and on July 19, 1975 at age 47 he died after a massive stroke.

James Charles Rodgers
(September 8, 1897 – May 26, 1933), known as "Jimmie," was a country singer in the early 20th century known most widely for his rhythmic yodeling. During his last recording session in New York City on May 24, 1933, after years of fighting the tuberculosis, Rodgers was so weakened that he needed to rest on a cot between songs.[1] Jimmie Rodgers died two days later on May 26, 1933 from a lung hemorrhage; he was only 35 years old.

Louis Daniel Armstrong
(August 4, 1901[2] – July 6, 1971), nicknamed Satchmo or Pops, was an American jazz trumpeter and singer from New Orleans, Louisiana. Armstrong died just after a heart attack on July 6, 1971, a month before his 70th birthday.

Robert Allen Palmer
(19 January 1949 – 26 September 2003), born in Batley, Yorkshire, was an English singer-songwriter. He was known for his soulful voice and the eclectic mix of musical styles on his albums, combining soul, jazz, rock, pop and blues. Palmer, who made his home in Lugano, Switzerland for his last 15 years, died in Paris, France in 2003 of a sudden heart attack at the age of 54.
Rick James
(February 1, 1948 – August 6, 2004) was an American Grammy Award winning musician. James was a popular R&B and funksinger in the late 1970s and 1980s, scoring four #1 hits on the U.S. R&B charts. Among his best-known songs are "Superfreak" and "You and I". In addition to his music, he gained notoriety for his wild lifestyle: later in life, James' drug abuse led to widely publicized legal problems. On the morning of August 6, 2004, Rick James was found dead in his Burbank, California, home at the Oakwood apartment complex on Barham Boulevard by his caretaker. James had died from pulmonary failure and cardiac failure with his various health conditions of diabetes, stroke, a pacemaker, and a heart attack.
Marvin Pentz Gay, Jr.
better known by his stage name Marvin Gaye, (April 2, 1939 – April 1, 1984)[2] was an American singer-songwriterand instrumentalist with a three-octave vocal range.[3] Starting as a member of the doo-wop group The Moonglows in the late fifties, he ventured into a solo career after the group disbanded in 1960’s. The following year, he was nominated for Best Male R&B Vocal Performance again, this time for the Midnight Love album. In February 1983, Gaye performed "The Star-Spangled Banner" at the NBA All-Star Game, held at The Forum in Inglewood, California, accompanied by Gordon Banks who played the studio tape from stands..[21] In March 1983, he gave his final performance in front of his old mentor Berry Gordy and the Motown label for Motown 25, performing "What's Going On". He then embarked on a U.S. tour to support his album. The tour, ending in August 1983, was plagued by health problems and Gaye's bouts with depression, and fear over an attempt on his life. When the tour ended, he isolated himself by moving into his parents' house. He threatened to commit suicide several times after bitter arguments with his father. On April 1, 1984, Gaye's father fatally shot him after an argument that started after his parents squabbled over misplaced business documents. Gaye attempted to intervene, and was killed by his father using a gun that Marvin Jr. had given him four months before. Marvin Gaye would have turned 45 the next day. Marvin Sr. was sentenced to five years of probation after pleading guilty to voluntary manslaughter. Charges of first-degree murder were dropped after it was revealed that Marvin Sr. had been beaten by Marvin Jr. before the killing. Doctors discovered Marvin Sr. had a brain tumor but was deemed fit for trial.

Ritchie Valens
(May 13, 1941 – February 3, 1959), was an American singer, songwriter and guitarist. A rock and roll pioneer and the forefather of the Chicano rock movement, Valens' recording career lasted only eight months. During this time however, he scored several hits, most notably "Donna" which peaked at #2 on the Billboard Best Sellers chart; and, the flip side "La Bamba", which was originally a Mexican folk song that Valens transformed into a song with a rock rhythm. Both songs charted in early 1959,[1][2]making Valens a pioneer of the Spanish-speaking rock and roll movement. In early 1959, Valens was traveling the Midwest on a multi-act rock and roll tour dubbed "The Winter Dance Party." Accompanying him were Buddy Holly with a new back-up band, Tommy Allsup on guitar, Waylon Jennings on bass, and Carl Bunch on drums; Dion and the Belmonts; J.P. "The Big Bopper" Richardson; and Frankie Sardo. None of the other performers had backing bands, so Buddy's backup band filled in for all the shows. The bus they all were taking on the tour was plagued with a defective heater and Holly decided to charter a small plane for himself and others. Valens, Holly, Richardson, and the pilot were killed when their small plane crashed quickly after taking off from Clear Lake, Iowa on February 3, 1959. Don McLean referred to it as "The Day the Music Died".

Rick Nelson
(May 8, 1940 – December 31, 1985), was an American singer, musician and actor. He placed 53 songs on the Billboard Hot 100 between 1957 and 1973, including 19 top-ten hits.[1] Nelson was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1987. In 1985, Nelson joined a nostalgia rock tour of England. It was a major success, and it revived some interest in his work. He tried to duplicate that effect in the United States, and he began a tour of the South. Nelson and his band boarded a plane after a show at a small club in Guntersville, Alabama headed to the KLUV-FM New Year's Eve Sock-Hop concert in Dallas, Texas. The plane crashed northeast of Dallas in De Kalb, Texas killing Nelson; his fiancée, Helen Blair; and five others.
